Dynamic Duo: Trump Takes An Offramp, Hegseth Takes A Victory LapAnd a New Yorker cartoon in honor of springHe threatened genocide. Yesterday, 90 minutes before Trump’s deadline to Iran, that he would destroy Iran’s civilization if they did not do what he wants, Trump announced a 2 week ceasefire. “The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.” Iran now controls the Strait of Hormuz and may do so indefinitely. This is a win for Iran and an embarassment for Trump. Because of the war that Trump started, this vital waterway is now in the hands of Iran. Nonetheless, Hegseth claimed victory in Iran, adding that American troops are not going anywhere, “we’re going to stick around.” They are trying to save face and threaten at the same time. Again, we see Trump attempting to change facts by repeatedly claiming he has affected a regime change in Iran, when there has been nothing of the sort. His lies and being overshadowed by the truth, his grasp on his supporters is slipping; he cannot lie his way out of this. The weight of what he has done, and continues to do, is too much. Trump’s arrogant actions are affecting too many lives. Trump the Narcissist has finally gone too far; all his life, his horrible bravado has worked, continually bailed out by others. He’s weaseled out of things. Now he has been give too much rope— you know the saying— which I don’t want to put in writing. It will do him in. More than 20 Democratic members of Congress have called for Trump’s cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment to the constitution to remove a president who is deemed unfit for office. My friend Andy Borowitz wrote yesterday: “Trump gave himself two weeks to invent a new distraction from Epstein Files.” Good news: in a special election in Georgia to fill Marjorie Taylor Green’s seat, all 10 of the district’s counties shifted by double digits toward the Democratic candidate compared with the 2024 presidential election. The Republican won as expected, but the numbers significantly favored Democrats. And in Wisconsin, voters gave a liberal Supreme Court candidate a commanding victory over a conservative rival. We have to have laser focus on what Trump is doing to interfere with the midterm elections. I end with a New Yorker cartoon in honor of spring. |
