In the box score, the story of the Red Sox’ 6-0 loss to the Twins on Tuesday looks simple: Sonny Gray pitched poorly and Mick Abel was great, so the fate of their respective clubs reflected that.
But the details were so much more damning for the Red Sox.
They didn’t advance a runner past first base until the eighth inning, and nobody got beyond second. Willson Contreras exited in the fifth inning because of lower back tightness. Andruw Monasterio, his replacement, challenged a strike-three call on a pitch that was fully in the zone by at least a couple of inches in every direction.
The Sox totaled six hits: two from Roman Anthony, two from Masataka Yoshida, two from everybody else.
