If you’re running for president in 2028, you’re making plans to visit New Hampshire, Iowa, and South Carolina over the next few years.
If you’re running for mayor of Cranston, your first stop might as well be Pizza Mamma.
While a large tax increase proposal and “The Real Housewives of Rhode Island” are the two biggest topics in the city, political junkies are already buzzing about the race to succeed term-limited Republican Mayor Ken Hopkins in 2028.
Here’s a look at the early contenders (in alphabetical order).
Ed Brady
A popular businessman and former Republican councilman, Brady confirmed that he is eyeing a run but now as a member of his old party. That could mean running as an independent (a difficult path) or running in the Democratic primary.
Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung
A former Republican state representative, Fenton-Fung got rolled by Hopkins in the Republican primary two years ago. But some of her concerns about the city’s finances are coming to fruition, and she maintains that she is not finished in politics.
John Igliozzi
You know Igliozzi as the longtime Providence councilman who kicked the tires on a run for attorney general this year, but his campaign never quite materialized. Well, he’s now the treasurer of the Cranston Democrats and taking a serious look at a mayoral run in 2028.
Nicholas Mattiello
The former House speaker lost his seat to Fenton-Fung in 2020, but he’s been a steady donor to many candidates and lobbyist since leaving office. His return to politics could be a run for City Hall.
Christopher Paplauskas
The Republican state representative succeeded Fenton-Fung in House District 15, and he’s also deputy chief of staff to Mayor Hopkins. He has generally been considered Hopkins’ heir apparent, although he’ll have to navigate stormy financial conditions in the city in the coming months.
Dan Wall
The Democratic City Council president appears to have a bright political future, with a run for mayor or General Assembly seen as potential options. He’ll also have to prove he can help Cranston navigate a challenging budget this year.
