The Patriots came away with nine new players in this year’s NFL Draft.
Here are a few things we learned about the incoming rookies and the state of the team . . .
1. The Patriots have loaded up at tackle: After drafting Will Campbell and Marcus Bryant last year, the Patriots once again double-dipped at tackle this year with Caleb Lomu (28th overall) and Dametrious Crownover (196th overall). Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf reiterated that Campbell will remain the team’s starting left tackle, but the Patriots now have multiple young options to play swing tackle and/or succeed 35-year-old Morgan Moses at right tackle. And, should Campbell end up shifting inside to guard, Lomu is a two-year starter at left tackle. Shoring up the tackle position seemed to be a top priority.
“I would say most of my career, you always think you’re going to have enough [tackles] once the training camp or preseason hits, and you don’t,” Wolf said.
