The Life and Career of Don Luis Velasco, the Younger (1539-1617)

Join the John W. Kluge Center and John F. Schwaller, current Jay Kislak Chair in the Study of the History and Culture of the Early Americas, for a discussion of Don Luis de Velasco the Younger, who would serve as Viceroy of Peru as well as Viceroy of New Spain during the 16th and 17th Centuries. This event will take place on May 6, 2026, at 4pm Eastern. 

This event can be viewed live virtually via Zoom, or in person at the Library of Congress. Click here to register for virtual viewing. There is no registration necessary for in-person attendance. 

Please note that this event will be held in the Mumford Room of the Library's James Madison Building, not in the usual room where Kluge Center public events are held. 

John F. Schwaller (known as Fritz) earned a BA in History from Grinnell College. He received an MA in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Kansas, and a doctorate in Colonial Latin American History from Indiana University. He is Professor Emeritus of History at the University at Albany (SUNY) and Research Adjunct in History at the University of Kansas. He is known for his work on the secular clergy in early colonial Mexico, Nahuatl language manuscripts, a history of the Catholic Church in Latin America, and studies on Mexica (Aztec) religion, the Cortés expedition, and the Stations of the Cross.
