In 1987 and 1988, the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress partnered with the Lowell Historic Preservation Commission to conduct a documentation project in Lowell, Massachusetts, capturing the lives and traditions of the city's diverse communities, including one of the largest Khmer diaspora populations in the United States. Fifty years after the first wave of Cambodian refugees arrived in Lowell—and fifty years after the founding of the American Folklife Center—Andrea Decker returned to Cambodia Town to present the Lowell Folklife Project collection at the Khmer Diaspora conference. This post reflects on the legacy of the Lowell Folklife Project Collection, discusses the history of Cambodia Town, and highlights community responses to the collection.
