Weekend Read

In South Korea, families with kids sometimes come across restaurants that simply don’t want them nearby. No kids allowed. This week for Christianity Today, Ahrum Yoo writes about a culture of skepticism toward children, constant corporate ladder-climbing, and her journey into motherhood. She writes about old coworkers who gave their kids to their parents to raise, only seeing them on the weekends so they could work more. There are real economic concerns, with the cost of raising children in South Korea one of the highest in the world. The fertility rate there is one of the lowest around the globe.

Yoo writes,

At the beginning of my career, I often worked overtime and attended late-night company gatherings. Some nights I returned home as the sun was peeking above the horizon, only to go back to work after a few hours of sleep. Working hard at a prestigious company gave me a sense of prestige.

But she got pregnant. And "during the first few months of my daughter’s life, God showed me a different mission for my life than the ambitious career goals my colleagues and Korean society had sold me."

Weekend Listen

Musician Amy Grant joined The Russell Moore Show this week to share about her upcoming album, her first in more than a decade.

"Writing is such a great processing tool," she said of working on new music. "You don’t have to have long stretches of quiet, but you do have to have dedicated days." | Listen here.

Bonnie Kristian, deputy editor: One of my favorite Instagram accounts is @antiqueappliance_restorations, a small business in the Northwoods of Minnesota that posts really remarkable videos of their work bringing 70-year-old fridges back to life.

Haley Byrd Wilt, interim editor: My son and I finished reading all of the How to Train Your Dragon books last year—and we have officially started over again. It’s so fun to read these with him now that he’s a bit older and able to laugh at all the best jokes.

Cover of the May/June issue

Throughout Scripture, God calls his people to be faithful and steadfast as we abide in him. Isaiah reminds us our faithfulness is fleeting "like the flowers of the field," yet our hope is secure when we place it in God, so our strength is renewed (Isa. 40:6, 31). In this issue, we consider stories of resilience. Historian Thomas S. Kidd shares missionary Adoniram Judson’s hardship and fortitude in Burma (now Myanmar). Emily Belz reports on Minnesota churches today that are supporting persecuted Karen Christians, also from Myanmar. Haleluya Hadero reports on groups who are determined to help Gary, Indiana, achieve a more resilient future. We also consider Tish Harrison Warren’s new book and feature an interview with her. Rooted in the person of Jesus Christ, Christian resilience is about more than having grit or bouncing back.
