Regions and cities seek greater involvement in EU preparedness and health resilience strategies

Local and regional leaders have emphasised that the European Union’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies will depend on closer coordination across all levels of governance. In two opinions adopted during its plenary session on 7 May, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) highlighted the need to reinforce Europe’s strategic resilience by ensuring that cities and regions are fully involved in the design and implementation of EU preparedness frameworks.

Energy crisis: local and regional leaders urge action to boost long-term resilience

The geopolitical tensions in Middle East and Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine have exposed Europe’s structural dependence on imported fossil fuel energy and external suppliers, driving renewed energy price volatility with serious economic impact for both consumers and businesses. The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) has welcomed the European Commission’s emergency measures presented in the AccelerateEU communication, while calling for more decisive action to tackle energy poverty and boost energy resilience in the long term.

Future EU budget: regions and cities set out their key requests to reform Cohesion Policy

Keeping Cohesion Policy’s predictable support for all regions, not only for the less developed ones; rejecting national investment plans when regions are not involved in their preparation; and a mandatory cross-cutting principle ensuring that every EU policy do not harm cohesion in Europe. These are the main proposals put forward by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) in a set of opinions on the post 2027 Cohesion Policy reform, all unanimously adopted at the plenary session on 6 May.

Rural development: regions call for a broader territorial cohesion agenda

Local and regional leaders adopted an opinion on the Future of Rural Development after 2027 during a plenary session of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) on 6 May. Led by rapporteur Radim Sršeň (CZ/EPP), mayor of Dolní Studénky, the opinion calls for rural development to be fully recognised as a core objective of cohesion policy, supported by dedicated funding and a coherent approach that goes beyond sector-specific agricultural policies.
