The Information

Greetings,

Cursor’s growing role inside xAI is starting to come into focus, and it says a lot about the pressure building around Elon Musk’s AI ambitions.

This week, we reported that Cursor staffers have been visiting xAI’s offices, just weeks after SpaceX secured an option to buy the coding startup for $60 billion. Their arrival comes as xAI faces fresh layoffs, the departure of a marquee hire who reported directly to Musk and bigger questions about what the company will look like as it folds into SpaceX.

Why it caught my eye:

  • Cursor is already making its presence felt inside xAI, even as it remains unclear whether Musk will ultimately buy the company.
  • xAI is facing notable internal strain, including layoffs across Grok teams and the exit of Devendra Chaplot roughly a month after joining.
  • The shake-up comes as Musk cuts costs, shifts data center capacity and dissolves xAI as a standalone company.

What stands out is how quickly xAI’s future is being reshaped across talent, infrastructure and strategy. Cursor may be central to what comes next, but for now, the path forward looks far from settled.

Best,

Jessica Lessin
