The idea of publishing a book can feel incredibly overwhelming.
The writing process alone is a lot, and then you're faced with the thought of actually getting it out into the world?
It can feel like staring up at a massive mountain. But after writing multiple books, I can tell you this: The mountain isn't nearly as steep as it looks.
Because...
Here’s what they don’t teach you in creative writing school:
The most prolific writers don’t write linearly.
They don’t start with the first word, and then keep writing words in (perfect) order until they’re done. No, this is a giant waste of time—because it’s sort of like trying to find your way through a forest, in the middle of the night, with nothing but a flashlight. You have no idea where you’re going!
Instead, the most prolific writers approach things in reverse.
They start with a birds-eye view, and then each layer takes them deeper and deeper “into the weeds.”
Here’s how it works at a high-level:
- Step 1: Spend a disproportionate amount of time thinking about the title
- Step 2: Make a list of all the Main Points and Sub-Points you want to make
- Step 3: Go down your list of Main Points, section by section and fill it in.
- Step 4: Do a final spelling/grammar read through.
- Step 5: Self-publish and promote your book on Amazon
The method that I’m going to share with you is how I outline and write all of my books, and I have self-published and written 10 books at this point. But it’s also how I create all of my social content, my YouTube videos, newsletters—anytime I’m sitting down to write anything, this is the method that I use.
Once you understand this framework, It will change the way you think about writing long form forever.
