RVES News and Notes - May 22

 May 22- News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

What a busy and exciting week we had at Rolling Valley! As we continue moving through the final stretch of the school year, our students and staff have remained engaged, focused, and full of energy.

A special thank you to the parents and families who joined us for our final PTA meeting of the year. Your partnership, support, and commitment to our school community make such a difference for our students and staff. We are incredibly grateful for all the ways our PTA and families support Rolling Valley throughout the year, from volunteering and event planning to advocating for our school community.

Our students also had several memorable learning experiences this week outside the classroom. Third grade enjoyed their field trip to Colvin Run, where they participated in hands-on learning connected to simple machines. Fifth-grade students stayed at Rolling Valley and had an opportunity to participate in the meaningful watershed experience. This allowed them to deepen their understanding through authentic, hands-on activities connected to science and environmental stewardship. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend and support this learning opportunity for our students.

Throughout the building, classrooms were filled with meaningful learning, collaborative conversations, hands-on activities, and opportunities for students to showcase their growth. It has been wonderful to see students continuing to challenge themselves academically while also building strong relationships with peers and staff.

As a reminder, there is no school Monday, May 25, through Wednesday, May 27. Please ensure your children return for the short week of Thursday and Friday!

Have a great weekend.

Attendance Rate!

Families, we are currently at a 6.8% absenteeism rate, which is the best we have been all year. Please help us keep this momentum going as we head into June.

I know next week is a short week, but please ensure your children are coming to school on Thursday, May 28, and Friday, May 29.

Thank you for working together to lower our chronic absenteeism rate.

Summer Device: Laptop Checkout

Dear Parents and Guardians, To support continued learning during the summer months, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will provide digital learning resources in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies for elementary students. Students have the option to check out an FCPS laptop for summer learning at home. Additional information regarding the available digital resources will be shared at a later time.  The deadline for checking out a laptop is June 11th.  If a laptop is checked out, it must be returned to Rolling Valley on or before July 30th.   Please be aware that families may be held financially responsible for repair or replacement costs if a device is lost, damaged due to misuse, or not returned. We encourage parents to review proper care guidelines with their students and consider protective measures to help prevent accidental damage.   Students participating in any of the following summer programs will automatically be issued a laptop from Rolling Valley ES:

  • SOAR
  • Young Scholars
  • Summer Explorers
  • ESY (Extended School Year)
  • 6th grade students attending the CTE Summer Academy

To check out a laptop for your student, please complete this Google form

From the Clinic!

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school.

Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Camp Details:

Spartan Volleyball Camp is designed and has a session for athletes of all skill levels who are eager to enhance their game in a challenging and supportive environment. Camp sessions are structured by age and skill level to ensure every player receives personalized instruction and the best opportunity for growth.

Campers will have the unique opportunity to train with experienced high school coaches from across the country, as well as current college athletes. Campers in Session A and B will also get to work with the high school athletes from the Virginia State Champions team! Sessions will include individual skill development, group instruction, and competitive tournament play, all designed to help players refine their technique, build confidence, and elevate their overall performance.

Session C is ONLY for advanced players.  Unfortunately, we do not have a session for rising 10th-12th graders who are new to volleyball or who only have freshmen team level experience and/or rec volleyball experience.  Athletes attending Session C must have played on their high school Varsity or JV team or are currently playing on a competitive club team. If you are signing up for Session C, the expectation is that you are playing volleyball at or close to the Varsity level.  Most rising 9th graders should be attending session B.
