Dear Waynewood Owls,
It has been another busy week at Waynewood, as some of our students ventured out into the world, and our families brought the world right here to us.
First, some of our Kindergarten Owls took a wonderful field trip to Arcadia Farms this week. They learned about sustainable agriculture and discovered exactly how food grows from a tiny seed into something delicious on their plates. Meanwhile, our third graders had a fantastic hands-on experience of their own at the Lego Discovery Center, where they put their engineering and creative thinking skills to the test. Watching our students connect their classroom lessons to the real world is always a highlight of the spring season.
The true highlight of our week, however, was the incredible "Around the World with Wayne" multicultural night hosted by our amazing PTA. It was a spectacular evening that truly showcased the rich diversity of our school family. We were treated to magnificent performances, including vibrant Bollywood dancing, impressive martial arts demonstrations, and beautiful Irish dancing. The booths hosted by our families were filled with fascinating history, pride, and absolutely delicious food. I want to extend a big thank you to Anu Grover and Janhavi Kirtane for their incredible work in organizing this massive event. Thank you also to every single family who hosted a booth and shared your beautiful heritage with us. You made the evening unforgettable.
Looking ahead to next week, please note that our schedule looks a bit different. There will be no school for students on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. We look forward to welcoming all of our Owls back to the nest on Thursday, May 28.
As we enter this extra-long weekend, I want to take a quiet moment to reflect on the significance of Monday. While Memorial Day brings the excitement of a long weekend and the unofficial start of summer, it is, above all, a sacred day of remembrance. At Waynewood, we are deeply mindful of the immense sacrifices made by the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives in service to our country. We hold their memory, and the families they left behind, in our hearts this weekend.
I hope this extended break brings your family peace, rest, and meaningful time spent together.
Sincerely,
Katie Cachine, Principal
Alyssa Bonner, Assistant Principal
We look forward to celebrating your child’s birthday with them. It is school policy that birthday treats need to be store bought, individually wrapped, and have clearly labeled ingredients. Non-food treats like special pencils, fidgets or stickers are also a great alternative that everyone can access.
Please do not send treats that do not meet that criteria. This includes donuts by the dozen, and bakery cupcakes that are not individually wrapped. We are not able to pass these out, and they will be sent back home with your child. We do not want to disappoint anyone on their birthday, so please do not send these kinds of items.
Thank you for your help to ensure we can safely celebrate your child with their classmates.
Please note that report cards will not be handed out on the last day of school this year. Families who selected “not paperless” for report card delivery will receive a paper copy of the final report card by mail.
Final report card for this school year will be available in ParentVUE on Thursday, June 18 at 6:00 AM.
We have now stopped borrowing library books for the year. Overdue notices were emailed last week; notices about all books still checked out will be sent on June 1st. Please help your child return all books as soon as possible. Thank you!
As we look toward the finish line of a fantastic school year, we are gearing up for our annual end-of-year classroom pack-up! This year, we are turning our logistics into a lesson on sustainability.
How You Can Help
We are asking for your help in collecting medium and large cardboard boxes. By sourcing these from our community, we are working together to:
-
Support "Get to Green": Reusing existing boxes directly supports our environmental goals, keeping extra waste out of our local systems.
-
Reduce Costs: Every box donated allows us to save money on classroom pack up supplies.
-
Empower Students: Our SCA leaders will be spearheading the advertising and organization of this drive, giving them a hands-on role in school operations. Your child can be on the lookout for boxes to be a part of our efforts.
What We Need
We are specifically looking for sturdy, clean boxes such as:
- Chewy boxes
- Standard Moving boxes
- Medium to large Amazon boxes
Timing
Please save those boxes at home for now! We will begin collecting them immediately following the Memorial Day student holiday through June 5. Thank you for being on the lookout and for helping us make our end-of-year transition both eco-friendly and cost efficient. We couldn't do it without our amazing community!
There will be a collection box in the front lobby for boxes starting next week!
Please Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance
It’s a busy time of year, and we know many priorities are on your plate. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to check your student’s MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.
Free and Reduced-Price Meals
Families who earn less than 185% of the poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals (FRM). However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2026-27 school year will be available this summer.
If you have a current balance and think you may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2025-26 school year.
Waynewood kindergarteners took a field trip to Arcadia Farms. In this picture they are digging through the compost, looking for worms! They also spent the day learning about and tasting various food grown at the farm.
The Solving Fun Puzzle Pals have been busy getting ready for the 3rd Annual Fairfax County Public Schools Puzzle Hunt, and it kicks off in only three weeks!
This free event is open to solvers of all ages and is a great way to keep students and families engaged in fun, creative problem-solving over the summer. It also teaches bike and pedestrian safety and encourages active transportation.
New this year: The school with the most solvers will win a special visit from Sue Doku! Sign up for the Puzzle Hunt!
