We are so proud of our 3rd–6th grade students for rocking their SOLs over the past two weeks! Watching them read the encouraging messages on our Wall of Stars was a wonderful reminder of how powerful it is when our Bucknell community comes together to support and celebrate our students. Way to go, Bulldogs!

Dear Bucknell Families,
We had another absolutely fantastic week here at Bucknell Elementary! The energy in the building has been amazing. This week, we officially finished up the majority of our SOL testing, and to put it simply: it was quite the vibe! Before the tests even started, our school community came together to make sure our students felt confident, excited, and ready to shine. We want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who made this testing season so positive:

Looking Ahead to June
As we flip the calendar to June next week, our schedule is packed with exciting end-of-year activities! We have so many wonderful milestones to mark, and we cannot wait to celebrate with all of our families. Please keep a close eye on your child’s folder and our upcoming emails for specific dates, times, and RSVP details for all end-of-year events.
Every Day Counts: Attendance Matters!
While the school year is winding down, we need to talk about something incredibly important: attendance. Right now, our chronic absenteeism rate is up compared to where we were at this exact time last year.
It is incredibly tempting to start summer vacation early, but every single day of instruction matters. Being in school until the very last day helps students finish their academic year strong and close out their routines with their peers. Let’s work together as a team to make sure our kids are at school each and every day!

As a reminder, there is no school for students early next week. We will see all of our Bulldogs back in the building on Thursday, May 28th!

Tenemos tantos hitos maravillosos que celebrar, y estamos deseando celebrarlo con todas nuestras familias. The Montessori Trinomial Cube invites children to explore patterns, dimension, and mathematical relationships through hands-on discovery—building a concrete foundation for algebra long before equations are introduced.
The Montessori Binomial and Trinomial Cubes are more than just beautiful wooden puzzles; they are powerful, hands-on tools designed to introduce young children to complex algebraic concepts through concrete manipulation. The Binomial Cube, typically introduced around age 3.5 or 4, is composed of eight wooden blocks—two cubes and six prisms—which, when assembled correctly, form a larger cube. By carefully fitting the pieces according to color and dimension, the child internalizes the relationship between the parts and the whole, laying a sensorial foundation for factoring and algebraic expansion long before they encounter symbols and equations.
The Trinomial Cube builds upon this initial understanding, presenting a significantly more complex challenge that corresponds to a formula. This cube is made up of 27 individual pieces, including three distinct cubes and various rectangular prisms, all of which must be organized and stacked in a specific pattern. While the younger child works with the cubes as a purely sensorial activity—a challenge of spatial reasoning and visual discrimination—the elementary-aged student (typically 6-9 years old) begins to connect the physical components directly to the mathematical notation. This progression exemplifies the Montessori method: moving from the concrete experience to the abstract concept, ensuring true comprehension rather than rote memorization.
By offering these sophisticated tools, the Montessori environment fosters a deep, intuitive appreciation for the order and structure inherent in mathematics, setting children up for success in advanced studies.

As a quick reminder, there will be no school Monday, May 25 through Wednesday, May 27. Schools will be closed for Memorial Day on May 25, followed by a teacher workday on May 26, and Eid al-Adha on May 27. Happy Eid to all who celebrate! We look forward to welcoming our Bulldogs back on Thursday, May 28.
As we head into the final weeks of the school year, Bucknell has many exciting events planned for students and families! From concerts and celebrations to Field Day and Bucky’s Big Night Out, we hope everyone can join us as we celebrate an amazing year together. Bucknell PTA is hosting a Loose Change May Challenge Fundraiser! Families are invited to send in any loose change during the month of May to help support end-of-year activities and future PTA events. The class that collects the most change will win a popsicle party! Thank you for supporting our Bucknell students and community. Currently, Ms. Narciso's Montessori class is in the lead with $129 and Ms. Weatherhead's 4th grade class is in second place with $65.50! Let's keep it going!
