An Intercept investigation has revealed that real estate companies with ties to the Israeli government are aggressively marketing properties for sale in the occupied West Bank to Americans in violation of international law.

These properties are promoted at expos widely considered to be open only to Jewish residents, and in at least one case, fair attendees were reportedly asked about their religious affiliations when registering — potentially in violation of the law.

When Palestinian allies have protested these events, they’ve been met with violent police crackdowns and condemnations by political leaders of both parties.

Most news outlets simply won’t touch this story. But with your support, The Intercept is investigating and exposing the companies marketing illegally occupied Palestinian land in the United States, as well as the local and national political leaders defending their efforts.

West Bank settlements have long drawn criticism from the international community, which regards the settlements as illegal.

But real estate conventions selling homes on illegally occupied Palestinian land take place across North America each year. Events are commonly in synagogues, hotel conference rooms, or in people’s homes.

“These are not like tiny hilltop outposts; these are massive settlement blocks that are contiguous with and integrated into Israeli state proper,” said Rachel Feldman, an anthropologist at Dartmouth College who specializes in Judaism and Israel and Palestine. “I spoke to American Jewish settlers here who don’t even have a sense that they are living beyond the state’s borders.”

Despite the illegality of the settlements, real estate agents express no qualms. In fact, since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, real estate companies have made explicit appeals to wartime patriotism, leading with the conflict as a selling point and a reason to invest.
