Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control and Nonproliferation Dr. Christopher Yeaw will travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina, May 29 – June 5, 2026, to participate in the Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) Regional Workshop and conduct a series of bilateral meetings with regional counterparts.

During his visit, Assistant Secretary Yeaw will meet with Argentine government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss space security, civil nuclear energy engagement and economic cooperation.

The FIRST Workshop, held June 2-4, will bring together government representatives from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, and Peru as well as FIRST contributing partners Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom. Countries will discuss civil nuclear energy development in Latin America and the Caribbean, including the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs), supply chain considerations, and non-electrical applications for nuclear energy.
