Dear Travel Fan,

The first games in this summer’s FIFA World Cup begin next week and will continue for more than a month. If you’re planning on traveling to any of the games — or will be in a host location and want to take part in the surrounding celebrations — our city-by-city guide has all the information you need.

Another celebration coming up is the Midsummer holiday, marked by many countries in Northern Europe, but especially in Sweden. Here’s how to take part. And in Hawaii, we’ve got a roundup of great swimming holes if you’re looking for a freshwater dip.

Portugal’s popularity as a travel destination keeps growing, and this week we’ve got a report from Lisbon, with updates on restaurants and hotels and also a look at gay life in the city. Scotland is another must-see for many travelers, and our 36 Hours column visits the Isle of Skye, with its dramatic landscapes, windswept beaches and tempting distilleries.

Our Revolutionary Journeys series continues this week with a look at Charleston, S.C., where the city’s important role in the fight for independence is often obscured. Our reporter looked for clues in the city itself and in the surrounding Lowcountry.

Airport lounges are perhaps too popular these days, as fliers fight for access and often have to wait in line to get in. A new solution: grab-and-go versions, where travelers can pick up a beverage and a quick bite to eat, but can’t settle in. We’ve got a look at some of the new options.

And the use of electronic travel authorizations has been spreading, with visitors to the U.S. needing to fill out an ESTA application and the European Entry/Exit system in place for travelers to the Schengen zone. But what happens when the system goes down? Some would-be travelers to Britain found out this week.

Wishing you safe and happy travels,
Amy Virshup
