Dear readers,

It’s been a pleasure to peruse the comments section on our summer reading bucket list and get a sense of what everyone is excited to read. (People revisiting Homer in preparation for the film adaptation of the “Odyssey” coming next month! Fans of Abdulrazak Gurnah!)

I’m professionally bound to pay attention to any possible “it book” this season, but truthfully, I like when summer reading tastes veer off in unexpected directions. To that end, here are a selection of eclectic, but excellent, recent books that might catch your fancy.

WHY DON’T YOU …

The book cover of “Taiwan Travelogue,” by Yang Shuang-zi

Plunge into the dazzling, nesting-doll story that just won the International Booker?

A close-up of a woman’s face, taken outdoors. She has tousled blond hair, dark eyes and a wry smile.

Brian Dillon

Pick up a brilliant memoir about an awful event that avoids resorting to the “trauma plot”?

A color illustration of two horses, one darker than the other, resting their necks on each other at sunset.

Holly Stapleton

Languish in Ann Patchett’s latest novel, which has plenty of room for kindness and heart?

Beneath palm trees, a man in a wide-brimmed hat holds a green bird in his right hand. Seated beside him, a younger man in a red frock studies the bird and prepares to draw it in a notebook he holds open on his lap.

Jean-François Rigaud/National Portrait Gallery, Parkes, Australia

Learn about the astounding teenager who sailed with Captain Cook?

An illustration shows a woman from behind, holding a cocktail glass. She is surrounded by oversized vines with flowers, and two other figures can be viewed from the waist down.

Doeun Choi

Peruse the latest crop of thrillers?

A black-and-white photo shows a child walking across stone steps between a man and a woman, all holding hands. The man wears glasses and smiles; the woman carries papers.

David Handschuh/Associated Press

Learn about life underground from a man raised by radicals on the run?
