In Your WordsRe: “The High Cost of Silent Classrooms” When will we realize that the increase of the use of the computer in classrooms has directly corresponded with a continuous decline in achievement? This is an experiment that has failed spectacularly, has cost our school systems billions, and has contributed to social breakdown. It is time to go back to what works: blackboards, pencils, books and interaction with others. Technology should be introduced slowly, and not at all in the early grades. This will require retraining of teachers and a whole new attitude toward learning that recognizes what works. I am 75 years old and have watched this slow decline.
