Politicians and police have condemned the violence that erupted in Northern Ireland on Tuesday night. On one street in east Belfast, hundreds of masked men carrying bottles and bricks set bins on fire and shouted "foreigners out". Residents had to flee their homes as flames engulfed them, with a pastor saying people were being put out of their houses "because they're black". The violence follows a knife attack in north Belfast that caused the victim, who remains in hospital with serious injuries, to lose an eye. The suspect, a 30-year-old Sudanese man named Hadi Alodid, has been charged with attempted murder, threats to kill an NHS worker and possession of a knife.
