Behind the Scenes: Why so glum? Mass. economy’s growing, yet we’re all still down
Talking with a good friend, who happens to be a star business executive, the other day, we lamented all of the challenges we face in building businesses in Massachusetts when talented people can’t afford to live here.
In general, you may have noticed that a whole lot of business execs aren’t exactly thrilled with how things are going this year. Maybe we’re just kind of that way here in Massachusetts – I mean everyone thinks of us as MassHoles, so maybe we’re just living into it.
But it also feels somewhat strange given that Mass. has the highest GDP in the country. So why the big disconnect?
This is precisely the question that MassLive’s innovation columnist, Scott Kirsner, probes this week in his excellent column.
Scott had a chance to catch up with Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development Eric Paley, who was named to the job about a year ago. Paley addresses the issues head on – talking about our real challenges but balancing that against all of the great attributes we have as a region. The column is worth a read for sure.
We’ll also touch upon some of these issues on July 9 at The Vineyard Forum.
I had a chance to meet with our wonderful partners at The Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown where the forum will be held this year. If you want to see what it looks like, click here to get a glimpse.
