Note from Los Angeles VA Regional Office Assistant Director, Jamie Cannon
For the Department of Veterans Affairs, Juneteenth is both a historical marker and a reminder of our ongoing commitment to equity, dignity, and service for all who have worn the uniform. Juneteenth, observed each year on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Union Army Major General Gordon Granger delivered General Order No. 3 on that day, formally announcing that all enslaved people in Texas were free, marking the final enforcement of emancipation in the United States. The day is also referred to as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Cel-Liberation Day, Second Independence Day, and Emancipation Day. As we honor this day, we reflect on the courage and resilience that have shaped our nation and reaffirm our dedication to supporting every Veteran with respect, inclusion, and gratitude. As Frederick Douglass once said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress,” reminding us that the pursuit of freedom is both a legacy and a continuing responsibility.
