I've been covering merger stories for a quarter of a century, but I've never seen one as politically loaded as Paramount's move to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. From the get-go this business deal was highly politicized, with Paramount widely seen as the favored suitor by President Trump, and with a Justice Department that sped through the approval of the deal, shocking even the career lawyers internally - who were leaning towards a lawsuit. But over the last few weeks, things have gotten even more politically charged. Earlier this month, Paramount Chief Legal Officer Makan Delrahim alleged that people are “trying to inflict harm on this transaction really because of their antisemitic views.” The New York Post reported last week that some of these groups are funded by the likes of George Soros’ Open Society Foundation in a coordinated effort, citing unnamed sources “close to the merger.” Groups like Codepink, which largely focuses on anti-war efforts, have become a player in the opposition.
