Most commercial sensor apps weren't built for research. They lock you out of your data, flag their own security risks, and offer no path to real analysis.
Dan Bujoreanu ran into this exact problem while building a precision greenhouse monitoring system. Rather than accept the vendor app that came with his hardware, he built his own stack: IoT sensors writing to InfluxDB every five minutes, visualized in Grafana, running on a self-hosted Intel NUC.
What we'll cover:
- Why the native sensor app failed
- The full stack: Ecowitt sensors → InfluxDB → Grafana on a 2015 Intel NUC
- How InfluxDB handles continuous soil humidity and air quality readings at 5-minute intervals
- What Dan is exploring next: weather data integration and InfluxDB 3's SQL interface and processing engine
