The Strength to Bend Without Breaking
Many people mistake rigidity for strength. They believe that being strong means holding your position at all costs, refusing to change your mind, and pushing harder every time resistance appears
But real strength is more intelligent than that.
In nature, the tree that refuses to move during a violent storm may eventually snap, while the reed that bends with the wind survives and continues to grow. The same principle applies to leadership. The ability to adjust, learn, and respond to changing conditions is not a weakness of your character. It is a sign that your strength has range.
In the SEAL Teams, we had a phrase: Semper Gumby, which means "always flexible." We often said it with humor, but the lesson behind it was serious. Missions change. Information changes. The conditions you prepared for are often not the conditions you encounter.
The leaders who thrive are not the ones who stubbornly cling to the original plan. They are the ones who can release their attachment to the method while remaining completely committed to the mission.
This applies physically, mentally, and emotionally. A flexible body can move with greater efficiency and resilience. A flexible mind can absorb new information without feeling threatened. A flexible emotional state allows you to experience discomfort, frustration, and uncertainty without letting those emotions control your actions.
Your Ethos remains your anchor. Your values remain your foundation. Flexibility simply gives you more ways to live those values effectively in an unpredictable world.
The goal is not to become so rigid that nothing can move you. The goal is to become so grounded that you can move with whatever life places in front of you.
