Dear readers, I am a total sucker for New York City history. I am also a four-season beach rat. So you can imagine my delight upon discovering a new memoir by the city’s first female chief lifeguard, Janet Fash, who watched over Rockaway Beach’s coastline for decades. In “Lifeguard: A Love Story,” Fash and her co-writer, Clio Chang, recount her years in this elite New York City subculture, as Fash battled with management and confronted the misogyny of her fellow guards. Hers is an intoxicating time capsule, alive with the sounds and tastes of a bygone New York. My colleague Elisabeth Egan went out to the Rockaways to meet with Fash and then — as people will on a good beach day — they headed to a bar afterward, the local institution Connolly’s. Naturally, there’s a picture of Fash hanging on its wood-paneled walls. See you next week. Like this email? We hope you’ve enjoyed this newsletter, which is made possible through subscriber support.
