On the eve of the republic’s 250th birthday, how are Americans feeling about their country? As part of our seven-chapter project on America’s history, we surveyed more than 1,500 of them. Young and old, Republican and Democrat, they had mixed opinions on America’s triumphs, failings and prospects of making it to 500.
