Israel: High Court Imposes Sanctions on Individual Haredi Men Avoiding Draft

On April 26, 2026, Israel’s High Court of Justice accepted petitions to enforce the conscription obligation of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men and to implement the court’s June 2024 ruling (HCJ 6198/23) on this issue. (HCJ 5819-24 Movement for Quality of Government in Israel v. Minister of Defense.)BackgroundIn its 2024 ruling, the court accepted petitions to order the enforcement of the draft requirements in the Defense Service Law (Consolidated Version), 5746-1986, against yeshiva students. The court also declared that, given the expiration of the service-deferral arrangement previously in effect for yeshiva students, the government no longer had a legal basis to transfer funds to Haredi educational institutions based on the number of students who were not lawfully exempted from the draft....
