But it’s become an essential publishing tactic for all news website owners.
We spoke to Le Monde chief technology officer Paul Laleu about how the leading French newsbrand is slowing down and halting the bot invasion whilst also reaping the benefits of the deals it has done with OpenAI, Perplexity and Meta.

🗞️ To expand on my World Cup metaphor, The Canary’s launch of a new left-wing tabloid newspaper felt like the equivalent of Cape Verde’s bid to lift the famous FIFA trophy.
The yellow masthead title launched in June but lasted just two weeks (perhaps the shortest-lived national newspaper in publishing history).
Challenging times for The Canary have been compounded by the announcement on 30 June that it has been debanked by Lloyds, meaning it does not have money to pay its staff let alone print and distribute a newspaper to 8,000 newsagents five days a week.
A refusal to provide banking services can be due to criminal or regulatory concerns, commercial or reputational reasons. Lloyds has so far declined to comment.

He said many of his clients are now making nearly a third of their website advertising revenue from video.
While publishers are making serious money from revenue share on Facebook, Youtube and (to a lesser extent) Tiktok, there is still good money from serving videos and advertising on their own websites.
