The $25,000 question: Who can afford to be a suburban mayor in Evanston or elsewhere?

Speculation is already underway as to who will be the next mayor of Evanston, but far less attention has been given to the practical realities of what it takes, financially and otherwise, to hold office. Suburban mayors are paid minimal amounts or nothing at all while putting in full-time hours.
