Inside Thomas Tuchel’s relationship with Jude Bellingham at the heart of England’s World Cup

Perhaps a break in World Cup matches came at the wrong time for Thomas Tuchel and Jude Bellingham as a rare day without games allowed the spotlight to remain on their relationship and their differing views of England's quarter-final victory over Norway.

In the aftermath of England's quarter-final win, Tuchel played down some of his more abrasive comments over England's performance and praised the team's effort and spirit as well as "the belief to overcome adversity and... find ways to win" which he revealed to be "on the absolutely highest level". That will lessen any lingering animosity from Bellingham or other members of the squad as preparations for Argentina take shape.

England's ability to adapt to developing situations has been tested during this campaign and Chris Wilson explains how Tuchel's decision-making and willingness to switch to Plan B could be a crucial factor if they are to achieve the ultimate aim of winning the World Cup. 

Elsewhere the controversial nature of Argentina's 3-1 victory over Switzerland continues to be debated with Swiss manager Murat Yakin insisting that his side’s quarter-final was destroyed by the new mistaken identity rule that led to Breel Embolo being sent off.

“The VAR and referee, the fact they introduced such a rule is unnecessary and I try to put it in very kind words but I think it is extremely hurtful," Yakin explained. "We are not going to go to the semi-finals but I think we deserved to be there."
