DIVINE INSPIRATION

Hey all,

Mark here. Here's what we have in store for this week...

WHAT I'M WRITING ABOUT

The Decision Behind the Decision

Leadership is filled with moments that don't have obvious answers. You have incomplete information, competing priorities, and people looking to you for direction. In those moments, your ability to make good decisions isn't determined by intelligence alone. It's determined by judgment.

Judgment is more than choosing between right and wrong. More often, it's choosing between two reasonable options while understanding the consequences that come with each. It's the ability to pause long enough to see the situation clearly, weigh the risks honestly, and make a decision that serves the mission rather than the moment.

I've seen good people make poor decisions, not because they lacked experience or capability, but because external pressure drowned out their internal discernment. Deadlines, expectations, authority, and the desire to avoid disappointment can all push us toward choices we already know aren't right.

The challenge is learning to recognize that pressure before it overrides your judgment.

That's why judgment is such an important leadership skill. It brings together your Ethos, your wisdom, your courage, and your composure into one simple question:

What is the right action, right now?

The leaders who earn lasting trust aren't the ones who always move the fastest. They're the ones who consistently make decisions they can stand behind long after the pressure has passed.

Hooyah!

NEW EPISODE - THE MARK DIVINE SHOW

The Mark Divine Show
Sheepdog Skill: Judgment
Episode #573

Every leader eventually faces a moment when external pressure begins to compete with internal conviction. The decision may seem obvious because of the expectations surrounding it, but good judgment requires something deeper. It requires the ability to separate pressure from principle and choose the response that truly serves the mission.

Podcast Highlights:

In this episode, I explore how judgment is formed, why even experienced leaders can make costly mistakes under pressure, and share a SEAL training story from Morro Bay that demonstrates how external expectations can override sound decision-making if we're not careful.

You’ll learn:

  • Why judgment is different from intelligence or experience
  • How external pressure quietly influences decisions
  • The role Ethos plays in strengthening judgment
  • Why courage is essential for making the right call
  • How to use the Consequence Scan before important decisions
  • The value of reviewing your decisions after the fact
  • How to recognize when pressure is replacing discernment

The quality of your leadership is shaped one decision at a time.

     I  NSPIRATIONAL QUOTE

“Judgment has to be protected from external override, especially when the pressure to comply is highest.” - Mark Divine

PRACTICE OR HABIT TO TRY

Before making one important decision this week, perform a Consequence Scan.

  1. Ask yourself:
    • What happenes if this goes as planned?
    • What happens if this goes wrong?
    • Am I moving forward because the analysis is sound – or because I feel pressure?
  2. If you're uncertain, pause before deciding.
  3. At the end of the day, review one decision you made and ask:
    • Would I have made the same choice if no one had been watching?
The more often you examine your decisions, the stronger your judgment becomes.
 REFLECTION:
Where in your life are outside expectations influencing decisions that should be guided by your own values?

The leaders who consistently make the best decisions are the ones who learn to trust disciplined judgment over the pressure of the moment.
