This fall, I will embark on an unforgettable journey that many have taken before me. It will involve precise planning, require considerable expense, and push my body beyond its limits.
I’m going on a girls’ trip.
One of my dearest friends is turning 40 in a few months, so a bunch of us are heading to the tropics to celebrate our enduring love for the birthday girl and each other. Though I will be taking a somewhat textbook girls’ trip (think: margaritas and moderately high ultraviolet rays), I’m actually pretty loose with how I define the term.
Girls’ trips don’t require a plane ticket. Girls’ trips do not have to resemble influencer brand excursions. And girls’ trips definitely don’t have to be women-only– my trip won’t be!
When it comes to girls’ trips, girlishness is less about gender, and more of a group ethos that prioritizes interdependent love and support, like being a member of Destiny’s Child. If your version of a girls’ trip is more of a pals’ expedition, I support it!
I have but one requirement for a girls’ trip: GOOD CHAT! If we’re not trading succulent morsels of gossip, beating dead horses, or shrieking with laughter… I’m staying home.
If a girls’ trip is not currently on the calendar or in the budget, these podcast recommendations are the perfect stand-in. Check them out if you’re looking for some encouragement on how to live a nice life, or you want to discuss whether your favorite celeb is really okay.
🚢 Bon voyage!

🌶️ Pa Ingalls, absolute zaddy
Growing up, I’d begrudgingly watch reruns of Little House on the Prairie when it was too rainy to play outside. But Pop Culture Happy Hour sold me on the Netflix reboot. It’s a delightful watch, and the hotness of new Pa Ingalls has definitely been discussed in my group chat.
🍀 This is a story about a girl named Lucky
Fame is easier to achieve than ever before, and yet celebrities and fans haven’t gotten any better at dealing with it. This episode of Group Chat (from the good folks at Buffalo Toronto Public Media) asks whether fame is destroying mental health in pop culture.
👋 Have a nice life. No, really!
I’m a big fan of of Life Kit host Marielle AND author Rachel Wilkerson Miller, and so I doubly loved this chat about Miller’s new book on how to have a nice life — and why it’s much more about joy, curiosity, and community than anything you could buy on The RealReal.
