House Republicans have passed the SAVE America Act again — this time hidden inside the must-pass National Defense Authorization Act. They’re betting the Senate won’t have the nerve to strip it back out. And it’s already turning ugly. Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security secretary, Markwayne Mullin, is threatening to prosecute state election officials who won’t hand over their voter rolls and comply with the administration’s demands. Let’s be clear: A Cabinet secretary is threatening to imprison the people who run our elections. That’s the threat we face right now. The SAVE America Act would force Americans to produce a passport or birth certificate just to register to vote or update their voter registration — documents that millions of eligible citizens don’t have on hand. People who changed their names after marriage. Young voters. Rural voters. People who moved. If you can’t produce the paper, you don’t get to vote. That’s the point. They want to shrink the electorate ahead of the midterms and punish anyone who won’t help them do it. The Senate can still kill this bill. But only if they hear from enough of us. |
