RF/Microwave Benefits: Low Dielectric Loss for Superior Signal Integrity
At radio and microwave frequencies, the substrate a circuit is built on is no longer a passive bystander, it actively determines how much signal energy is delivered and how much is wasted as heat. RF and microwave PCBs are engineered around materials with exceptionally low dielectric loss tangent (Df), the property that governs how efficiently a substrate transmits high-frequency signals.
Standard FR-4, with a loss tangent of 0.020 to 0.025, is poorly suited for frequencies above a few gigahertz. RF-grade materials such as PTFE composites and Rogers laminates achieve Df values as low as 0.0002, an order of magnitude improvement that translates directly into lower insertion loss, longer transmission distances, and higher system efficiency.
This matters most in applications like satellite communications, radar systems, and 5G mmWave infrastructure, where every fraction of a decibel in signal loss affects range, sensitivity, and output power. Selecting the right low loss substrate is the foundational design decision in any RF or microwave PCB.
