So far, Colorado has avoided the cyclospora outbreak, but had no such luck with salmonella.

The state health department is still trying to figure out why Colorado had double the typical number of salmonella cases in July. The process involves talking to sick people about what they ate in the days immediately before falling ill, in the hope of finding a pattern.

They asked that other people with ongoing diarrhea and other salmonella symptoms see a health care provider about testing. Most people ride out stomach bugs at home, so we never know the true scope of foodborne illness outbreaks.

The U.S. is having a difficult summer for food-borne illnesses, with more than 10,000 cases of sometimes “explosive” diarrhea linked to the cyclospora parasite in Michigan and surrounding states.
