You know it’s August when you can read not one but two important investigations about ice cream in one week. For Wirecutter, Annemarie Conte committed herself to tasting an awful lot of Talenti gelato after one of the authors of the vanilla ice cream guide called it “thin,” “gray” and (shudder) “subpar.” Annemarie, who once considered herself a “Talenti evangelist,” ate 34 pints to figure out if the brand’s flavors changed after it was acquired by a large corporation a dozen years ago — or if she had. Over on the Food desk, Mahira Rivers, a contributing restaurant critic for The Times, visited 76 establishments to find the best ice cream in New York City right now. It’s a tough job, right? Both Annemarie and Mahira’s findings are below. Also in this edition, get advice for treating knee pain and choose your next summer read from our list of the best thrillers since 2000. Make sure to spend some time with that one — 291 crime novelists, booksellers, librarians and other book lovers voted. I’ll see you next weekend(er). — Farah
