Violent crimes seem like they've been spiking in Boston, but what does data show?

It’s been a busy summer for the Boston Police Department responding to crime scenes across the city, including two separate stabbings, one that was fatal, just a day apart last week near North Station and South Station, but how are these reflecting in the numbers compared to last year?

Preliminary data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows homicide cases for the year are actually down — there have been 10 in the first half of this year, significantly lower than the 21 at this time last year. The reported number of rapes and robberies are also down compared to last year. The number of aggravated assaults is higher so far, however.

Despite the string of recent violent crimes, people we’ve spoken to say they feel relatively safe in Boston.

Patriots' Christian Gonzalez continues to work way back from injury amid contract talks

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez was again held out of practice on Saturday as he continues to recover from an injury he sustained in a workout last week.

Coach Mike Vrabel didn’t reveal what the injury was that also kept the star cornerback out of uniform for Thursday’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. But said Gonzalez is currently conditioning and working to get back to the field.

His absence coincides with his representatives’ ongoing negotiations with the team on a long-term contract extension. The two sides are trying to work out a deal to keep him in New England beyond the final year of his rookie deal. Until last week he’d remained a full participant on the field, even as workouts shifted to full pads.
