Former New York Yankees pitcher Tommy John, whose injury comeback was so storied he had a groundbreaking elbow surgery named after him, has died at the age of 83.

John died at his home in Florida surrounded by his family, according to a statement from his agent Sunday.

The Yankees posted a goodbye letter from John on Aug. 8 in which he thanked the surgeon who repaired his arm, extending his career.
