Fighting for journalism and profitable news media Pink News to cut up to 11 staff amid Snapchat changesPlus Reach hits 50,000 paid subscribers in under nine monthsGood morning from the team at Press Gazette on Thursday, 20 August. 🏳️🌈 Earlier this year Pink News told staff it was moving away from a “reporter-led” newsroom but continued to publish news, pop culture and entertainment content. It has now dealt a further blow to staff as changes to how publisher content is displayed at Snapchat expected to deal a huge blow to revenue. Up to 11 jobs look set to be cut, with a voluntary redundancy round open at first. It’s another reminder that relying too much on one platform is a risky place to be in today’s media ecosystem. Considering premium paywalls had only recently gone live on two Reach sites at the end of 2025, it’s been a significant ramp up to reach 19 brands now. It’s a necessary step in the end of Reach’s volume and clicks era towards original journalism and better relationships with its audience. Making something worth paying for is the best test of that relationship. It’s been saddening to see the attacks on the media, and individual journalists, this week in the wake of Cambridge academic Jason Arday’s death. As The Guardian’s NUJ chapel said last night, there are “genuine concerns” to be raised about how a story like Arday’s is covered. But that is no excuse for journalists to be targeted in a witch hunt themselves or sent abuse, including racist abuse, and threats. Seeing lists of named journalists circulating on social media feels like it has gone far beyond anything I have seen before. I am interested in how newsroom leaders and journalists are feeling this week and how you think the media should best respond to what’s being said. Please drop me a message on charlotte.tobitt@pressgazette.co.uk if you feel able to share some thoughts, even if it’s anonymous. I will leave you with one example of public interest journalism gone right. We spoke to The Guardian’s David Conn about how his work helped lead to the ‘Hillsborough Law’ currently going through Parliament. From our sponsor |
