Can You Read Spanish? Latin? Catalan? The Library of Congress Needs Your Help
What can you learn about the history of Spain from a 500-year-old will? This is the question behind the transcription campaign for the Law Library of Congress’s Spanish Legal Documents collection. In 2020, By the People launched a campaign for the Spanish Legal Documents collection as “Herencia: Centuries of Spanish Legal Documents.” Through transcription, the Law Library has found many fascinating stories within these seemingly dry legal texts, from French hat smuggling to 18th century marriage orders and their consequences, and how Havana became British … for eleven months.
Do you want to connect with world history through multiple languages and practice your Spanish, Latin, and Catalan as you help us complete this collection? That’s where public volunteer transcribers come in! The By the People program invites anyone to become part of the Library of Congress as a transcription volunteer.

The Library of Congress has added a new musical gift from Wales, presented to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. An excerpt of the work was first performed in the U.S. on Sept. 1 in the Library's historic Coolidge Auditorium, with the score now set to join the Library's extensive music collections. "Symffoni'r Môr Mawr, A Transatlantic Symphony," is a 15-minute orchestral work with voices by multi-award-winning composer Katie Jenkins.
"‘Symffoni'r Môr Mawr’ is a wonderful addition to our vast music collections. It was an honor to welcome the premiere of this piece on our Coolidge Auditorium stage," said Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen. "This gift from Wales reflects the cultural bond between our two nations, and we are proud that this musical work will now be preserved here for the American people and researchers for generations to come."
Rooted in Wales, a nation of storytellers and innovators, the piece draws on the colors of Welsh song and the energy of America's musical traditions to celebrate shared values of creativity, community and the drive to build a better future.

Due to the Biennial National Conference, the Many Faces of BARD program will be held on September 3, which is the first Thursday of the month. The program will resume its regularly scheduled second Thursday of the month in October.
The topic for the Thursday, September 3, Many Faces of BARD program will be Introducing the Web Player. After the presentation and demonstration, we will take your questions about all things BARD for the remainder of the hour.
