Trump Administration Invests $25 Million to Modernize Healthcare Technology, Expand Telehealth, and Improve High-Speed Internet Connectivity Across Michigan

This federal investment will help expand access and upgrade technology so doctors and patients can better connect and coordinate care across Michigan

The Trump Administration announced today that a $25 million investment is being delivered to improve health outcomes for Michiganders through the federal Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP). This investment will help rural communities in Michigan overcome barriers to care and build stronger, more connected health systems by modernizing technology; upgrading digital systems; improving data exchange and connectivity; and expanding telehealth, remote patient monitoring, and technology-driven care coordination. 

More than $16 million will help rural healthcare providers upgrade their technology and digital systems so doctors and patients can better connect and coordinate care, while more than $9 million will improve high-speed internet and other connectivity needed to deliver healthcare in rural areas. These investments build on the Administration’s $70 million in funding previously announced focused on improving health data interoperability, strengthening rural health partnerships, developing the rural healthcare workforce, bringing care closer to home, and supporting Tribal communities across Michigan.

“President Trump understands that every American deserves high-quality healthcare, no matter where they live,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “We are putting resources directly into rural communities to strengthen the health workforce, modernize infrastructure, expand access, and bring care closer to home. We are giving states the flexibility to build solutions around the people they serve, while demanding accountability for results. That is how we strengthen rural health, improve the lives of patients and families, and Make America Healthy Again.”

“President Trump made a historic commitment to rural America, and these investments are turning that commitment into better care for patients in communities across Michigan,” said Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “This is what rural health transformation should look like: federal investment that is putting patients first, driving lasting improvements and expanding healthcare for the hardworking Americans who call these communities home.”

This investment was made possible through the Working Families Tax Cuts Act — passed by Republicans in Congress and unanimously opposed by Democrats — delivering a historic $50 billion investment to help states transform the way healthcare is delivered in America.

“Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, Republicans delivered the Rural Health Transformation Program. Every single Democrat voted against this legislation, which represents the largest investment ever made to improve health care for rural Americans,” said Rep. Lisa McClain. “This historic funding will strengthen rural Michigan by expanding our healthcare workforce and modernizing facilities and technology. The Rural Health Transformation Program gives more Michiganders easy access to quality, affordable care close to home.”

“Access to quality healthcare shouldn’t depend on whether you live in a big city or a rural community. President Trump made a commitment to rural America, and this $25 million investment is putting that commitment into action by helping modernize our healthcare system, expand access, and bring better care closer to home,” said Rep. Jack Bergman. “I’ll continue working with the Trump Administration to make sure Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula have the resources they need to keep our rural communities strong.”

“The Rural Health Transformation Program we delivered with the Working Families Tax Cuts Act is investing more than $173 million to help lower costs and improve quality of care for Michiganders in rural communities. The newest $25 million investment will modernize technology and strengthen internet service at our rural hospitals to better connect patients with their healthcare professionals and deliver more efficient, timely care,” said Rep. Tom Barrett. “I’m eager to see this funding expand healthcare access for everyone who calls rural mid-Michigan home.”

“Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cut, Michigan is getting funds to help make sure people in rural areas are able to get the care they need in their own community,” said Rep. John James. “The money will help ensure people don’t avoid seeking treatment simply because it’s difficult getting to the doctor, who may be far away.”

Today’s funding announcement is part of the larger overall funding amount being awarded to Michigan for fiscal year 2026. 

Projects supported by this funding include:

• Office of Rural Prosperity: Modernizes rural health technology and digital infrastructure to strengthen care coordination, expand telehealth and remote monitoring, and bring care closer to home.
• Michigan High-Speed Internet Office: Expands broadband access and regional investments while supporting digital equity and health information exchange to better connect rural providers and patients.
• Workforce Development: Strengthens Michigan’s rural health workforce by supporting the recruitment, training, and retention of healthcare professionals across rural communities.

The Trump Administration is delivering on its commitment to strengthen rural America by investing in solutions that modernize technology to promote health and well-being for rural communities. Led by CMS, the RHTP is moving beyond the failed one-size-fits-all approach and giving rural communities the tools to build stronger, more innovative, and more sustainable health systems that deliver better care and better outcomes for the Americans they serve.
