AI in PCB design: what's real, what's hype, and what to watch
AI layout tools are getting a lot of attention right now. Model makers are claiming their tools can take a schematic and hand back a fully routed board, and some engineers are posting about AI-designed prototypes that worked on the first spin. It's easy to get swept up in it, and just as easy to dismiss the whole thing.
We build boards every day, so here's how it looks from the fab side.
WHAT'S REAL
For simple, low-complexity boards, AI can get you to a first draft faster. Some engineers say it's even more useful earlier in the process, reading datasheets and helping with component selection.
WHAT'S HYPE
Autorouting has been around for decades. Experienced designers remember tools that finished the job but ignored impedance constraints or created ground loops that took weeks to track down. A fully routed board is not the same as a board you can trust.
When Hackaday looked at a recent independent benchmark of AI board design, the takeaway was clear: production boards still need to handle every edge case, get reviewed by more than one engineer, and pass testing before anything goes to a production run. High power, RF, and switching supplies are where layout judgment matters most, and where these tools are least proven.
One engineer shared that an AI tool recommended replacement parts that were already discontinued. A person running a parametric search found the right part.
A PRACTICAL WAY TO USE IT
Treat AI output as a first draft, never a release candidate. Keep proprietary designs local. Use tools that run on your own machine, or get no-training, no-retention terms in writing. Review critical nets by hand: power, high speed, RF, and controlled impedance. Check against your fab's actual capabilities, not generic DRC defaults. Get a DFM review before you commit.
That last step is where we come in. Every ASC Sunstone customer has access to a free DFM check through their ASC Sunstone online account, helping identify potential manufacturing issues before their design goes into production.
However your board gets designed, we'll make sure it builds.
