It was a great Tuesday night for Yankees scout Matt Hyde, who got his start in baseball as a Cape Cod League batboy when he was 10 years old, went to Phillips Andover, then was an assistant baseball coach at Harvard and Boston College. Hyde is the man responsible for drafting Cam Schlittler and Ben Rice while New England slept.
Schlittler, a son of Walpole, Mass., whose dad is Needham chief of police, starred in the Bay State League against Newton North and Braintree, then took his mound act to Northeastern and was drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round in 2022. He stuffed the Red Sox on two hits over 6⅓ innings of a 9-0 blowout in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series in the Bronx.
Oh, and then there’s Rice. Cohasset-raised, he went to Nobles, then Dartmouth — his dad played at Brown and is a Boston Park League Hall of Famer — and was drafted in the 12th round in 2021. In support of his Mass. homeboy, Rice drove in six runs with two homers, including an eighth-inning grand slam to make Tuesday’s game a laugher.
Local legends, body-slamming your Boston Red Sox. Ugh.
