Set the Right Work Tempo

Setting the right pace of work is a core leadership skill. Push too hard for too long, and you can exhaust your team. Move too slowly, and momentum can fade. The challenge is recognizing when it’s time to change speed.

Read your team’s pulse. Watch how people are responding to the current pace. Are they energized by the demands or struggling to keep up? Pay attention when work starts to stall or people become increasingly reactive. Dashboards can help, but direct observation matters too. Spend time with your team and listen for signs that the pace needs adjusting.

Make shifts in pace clear. If you need to accelerate, explain what has changed and why greater urgency is necessary. Then help people focus by narrowing their priorities. If you need to slow down, be equally deliberate. Make clear that the change is intended to create space for better thinking or higher-quality work.

Create a steady rhythm. Give your team a consistent operating cadence so they know what to expect. Over time, that rhythm can help people move quickly without feeling frantic. It also makes a change in pace more noticeable, reinforcing that the shift is intentional.
