WWES Friday Updates 10/9/2026

October 9, 2026

Dear Waynewood Owls,

First, I want to share a tremendous thank you to everyone who made our annual Fall Book Fair such a wildly successful event! A very special shoutout goes to our fantastic librarian, Ms. Krause, whose endless dedication and hard work brought the joy of reading to life for all of our students. We are also deeply grateful to the wonderful parent and guardian volunteers who gave so generously of their time to run the registers, guide shoppers, and keep everything running smoothly. We couldn't have done it without you! I hope your children came home beaming with excitement, eager to dive into their brand-new books and share their favorite stories with you at home.

Our hands-on learning reached new heights this week as well. Our 4th graders had an absolute blast participating in the Arm & Hammer Rocket Day, putting their science and engineering skills to the test as they launched their creations into the sky. Meanwhile, our 1st graders enjoyed a fantastic fall adventure on their field trip to Shlagel Farms, exploring the outdoors and learning about farm life firsthand. It was also inspiring to see so many of our families lace up their sneakers and strap on their helmets for Walk or Bike to School Day. Thank you for helping us promote healthy habits and community spirit while keeping our neighborhood vibrant and active!

Looking ahead to next week, please remember that there is no school for students on Monday. Our dedicated teachers and staff will be hard at work during an in-service teacher workday, planning engaging lessons and preparing for the wonderful weeks ahead. We look forward to welcoming our Owls back to school on Tuesday, refreshed and ready to learn.

I hope you all enjoy the three-day weekend with your families!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alyssa Bonner, Assistant Principal

4th Grade Rocket Day!

Our 4th grade students participated in Rocket Day again this year! Rocket Day is a hands-on STEAM experience offered in recognition of World Space Week, October 4–10.

Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and schools across the country are working together to encourage students to explore science, creativity, and teamwork.  Waynewood students designed and launched their own rockets as a part of this experience.  A special thank you to Mrs. Melissa Sullivan for coordinating this fun and educational experience for our 4th grade students!

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This National School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing delicious, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
