Principal's Message

Greetings Twain Families!

I’m excited to share that Twain has been recognized as “Meets Expectations” under Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). This rating, based on data from last school year, shows that our school is meeting expectations set by the state for student performance.

The state system provides information about our school’s performance on academic and readiness measures. The framework places emphasis on standardized test results, alongside student growth, graduation, and readiness measures that vary by school level.

Twain Middle School has an overall framework score of 89, which falls into the Meets Expectations state performance category.

I want to be clear in saying that our students are much more than the results of standardized tests and point systems. Every day in our classrooms, hallways, gymnasiums and performance stages our amazing educators are leading moments of joy in learning. This recognition reflects the strength of our entire Twain school community. Our strong performance stands out and is something to celebrate.

We will continue building on this success. Our team is committed to keeping high expectations for learning, supporting each student’s unique strengths, and creating a school environment where every child feels welcomed, challenged, and cared for.

At Twain, we are committed to providing our students a consistent classroom experience that engages all learners, maximizes student potential, and enhances their educational experience. Last school year our instructional council - made up of administrative, classroom, and support leaders within our school - developed a concise list to describe what students should expect in every classroom they enter here at Twain. You may have noticed this list in the classrooms you visited on Back to School Night last month. It is also captured below.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to foster this important growth for all of our students in their middle school years. We are grateful for your support - it matters.

Have a great weekend. Go Tigers!

Matt

Twain Families: Explore SafeWalkr!

FCPS Safe Routes to School is excited to invite Twain families to try SafeWalkr, a new interactive walking map tool developed by Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology students in collaboration with our team!

If you live within Twain’s designated walking boundary, explore information about sidewalks, road crossings, and crossing guard locations to help plan your walk to school.

Go to the SafeWalkr tool, select Twain and explore a route with your child. Review current conditions and consider your child’s abilities and supervision needs before walking. The tool does not change walking boundaries or transportation eligibility. Help us improve SafeWalkr by sharing your feedback during the pilot. Thank you for supporting safe, active trips to school!

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Pedestrian Safety Tips From Fairfax County Police

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and the Fairfax County Police Department reminds drivers and pedestrians that everyone plays a role in keeping our roads safe.

Sexual Harassment Prohibited in FCPS

Regulation 4950 – Sexual Harassment by Employees states that no person in Fairfax County Public Schools shall be subjected to sexual harassment. It is the intent of the School Board to maintain an environment free from sexual harassment of any kind.

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature amounting to or constituting harassment are prohibited. Employees should report complaints of sexual harassment to their supervisors or program managers. Students, their parents, and caregivers should bring concerns to their school principals.

If for any reason an individual prefers not to address their concerns directly with a principal, supervisor, or program manager, they may consult or file a complaint online (select Discrimination/Bullying/Harassment Complaint).

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students ages 18 and under with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Additional dates will be available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are available.

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This National School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing delicious, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? View the Nutrition Services menus.

World Language Credit By Exam

Can your student read, write, and speak in another language? If so, they can earn up to 3 high school world language credits through the WLCBE. Students in grades 7-12 are offered the opportunity to take the World Languages Credit By Exam (WLCBE). The WLCBE assesses language proficiency in languages other than English and recognizes the strengths that our students bring as effective communicators in multiple languages. This assessment may be used to award world language credits towards graduation, determine course placement for language courses offered in FCPS.

The exam will be offered on November 6th this year at Twain MS. A student may participate in the exam a total of a total of two times per language between grades 7 and 12. Students who wish to take the exam should be able to proficiently understand and communicate in the testing language, and will be asked to listen, read, speak, and either write/type or, for American Sign Language, sign/interpret. More information can be found on the FCPS WLCBE page including a list of testable languages.

If you would like your student to participate in the next available WLCBE, they should meet with their school counselor by October 16th. No late registrations will be accepted.
