  Good evening, Herndon Families,
It has been a full week of learning and connection at Herndon. Our kindergarten students visited Cox Farms, and our third graders enjoyed a learning experience at Adventure Theatre. Our administrative team continued classroom walkthroughs. I also began Lunch Bunch with our fifth graders and filmed the third installment of Favorite Book Friday, featuring our third-grade readers and our focus on Walk to Read by third grade, connected to our work with the 2030 Strategic Plan. I look forward to sharing it with you- please follow us on Instagram at @herndonelementaryschool.
Congratulations to our Students of the Week and to Grade 1 for having the highest attendance in the school last week. Our school community’s current chronic absenteeism rate is 4.0%, and our goal is to finish the 2026–27 school year at 3.9%. Thank you for supporting regular attendance. Each day at school helps students stay connected to their learning.
Tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, we will host iPFIT Saturday. Participating students will have an opportunity to make up missed instructional time with support from an Advanced Academics teacher, grade-level teachers, and a counselor.
A few dates to keep in mind for next week: Monday, October 12, is a School Planning Day, and students do not attend. We look forward to welcoming families to Science Night on Tuesday, October 13, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Fall Picture Day is Friday, October 16.
We also look forward to seeing our students participate in the Homecoming Parade. Then, we hope to welcome many of our families to Herndon ES for Fall Festival on Saturday, October 24, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The festival is free and will include Trunk or Treat.
Please ensure that you take time to read the eNotify that I sent out today regarding the Virginia Department of Education’s School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF) results for 2025–26. Herndon ES earned a score of 75.68. Our goal this school year is to reach 80. We are focused on strengthening students’ reading, math, and science learning, supporting multilingual learners as they develop English, and expanding inclusive learning opportunities for students with disabilities, and ensuring that students are in school and maintaining a low chronic absenteeism rate. Thank you for partnering with us as we help every Bee learn, grow, and thrive.
Gratefully,
Dr. Monika Vereb
