Principal's Message

Hello, Scottie families!

It's been another great week here at Bonnie Brae!  The weather has been beautiful, and we have enjoyed seeing our Scotties engaged in joyful learning throughout the building.  As the weather begins to get cooler, please be sure to send your child to school with a jacket or sweatshirt, with their name clearly written on the label.

A reminder that Monday, October 12 is a School Planning Day, and there is no school for students.  Please see below for information from the PTO about the upcoming Fall Festival, which takes place next Friday, October 16.

One Scottie, One Book Adventure

One Scottie, One Book: A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold

During October, our school community will read A Boy Called Bat, a story about Bat, a boy who hopes to make a baby skunk his pet. As students read, they will explore themes of friendship, responsibility, and caring for animals.

Books and chapter questions will be sent home with every student PreK-6 on today, Friday, October 9, 2026.  Students will read/listen to two chapters each evening at home.

Families and students can view information related to our One Scottie, One Book adventure on our Bonnie Brae One Scottie, One Book webpage.

  • View the reading schedule.

  • View our chapter by chapter questions to help facilitate a discussion about the book at home.

  • Listen to individual chapters being read by Bonnie Brae staff.

  • Play some Kahoots to review the story.

  • Learn more about our Literacy Night (Thursday, October 29, 6-7:30 PM)

Join Us for Literacy Night!

  • When: Thursday, October 29, 6-7:30 PM
  • Where: Bonnie Brae Cafeteria and Gym

Literacy Night will feature literacy activities for students presented by Bonnie Brae staff, therapy dogs for children to read with, and a representative from the Burke Public Library to help families get library cards.

We invite families to join the fun by reading along and talking together about A Boy Called Bat. Ask your child what they think Bat should do or what makes a good friend and pet owner. We look forward to sharing this reading adventure with you!

Share Your Feedback on Traveling to and From School

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.

The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.

Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.

Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations.

Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are available.
