What is Digital Citizenship?: Digital citizenship is the responsible use of technology to participate in society. It includes skills and knowledge such as digital literacy, etiquette, safety, security, rights, and responsibilities. Our students engage in digital citizenship lessons throughout the year which helps to address timely topics and prepare them to take ownership of their digital lives. We will be promoting digital citizenship on our news show during Digital Citizenship week, so students, stay tuned!
Families are welcome to continue conversations at home during this special week by using the prompts that are often discussed in class with Mrs. Snyder.
-
Day 1 — Think Critically: Help your child ask questions about information and media and check where it came from before believing or sharing.
-
Day 2 — Protect: Talk with your child about personal information, safe choices, and asking a trusted adult for help when something online feels confusing or uncomfortable.
-
Day 3 — Shape: Help your child understand that online actions and shared information can leave a digital trail and influence how others see us.
-
Day 4 — Connect: Talk about communicating kindly, including others, and getting help when technology affects someone’s feelings or friendships.
-
Day 5 — Balance: Notice how technology affects focus, feelings, and routines, and discuss habits or breaks that support well-being.
Thank you to the Hayfield Pyramid families and caregivers who joined FCPS Instructional Services and the Hayfield Pyramid principals for a conversation about helping students build healthy digital habits on Thursday evening. The session explored practical ways to navigate social media, gaming, and screen time, including setting healthy boundaries while fostering independence, establishing device routines at home, and hearing students’ perspectives.
If you were unable to attend, you can watch the recording using this link Passcode :zh4KMcu3#t

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security and Safe Routes to School program are asking families to share their experiences traveling to and from their child’s school. The feedback will help inform the Fairfax County School Board’s annual assessment of traffic and pedestrian safety near schools.
The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Survey asks about walking and biking routes, traffic near schools, kiss-and-ride experiences, accessibility, and other safety concerns.
Your feedback will help FCPS identify common issues. Your responses will be kept confidential and shared with school administrators and the Office of Safety and Security. The five-minute survey is open through Thursday, October 15.
Be sure to identify the school related to your feedback and include specific locations where you have observed a safety issue. If you have students at different schools in FCPS, please complete a different survey for each school.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact SafeRoutestoSchool@fcps.edu.

FCPS will continue with limited early release Wednesdays for elementary schools during the 2026-27 school year, however the number has been reduced from eight to four days.
Early release Wednesdays provide elementary teachers with a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with peers. A well-supported and continuously improving teaching staff leads to better educational outcomes for students.
Here are the early release dates for Hayfield Elementary School. Students will be dismissed at 12:20 p.m. on the following days:
-
October 21
-
December 2
-
February 10
-
May 5
Please fill out Hayfield's Early Release Wednesday Dismissal Plan form so we can ensure your child is dismissed correctly on these days. You must submit the form by Oct. 19 if you wish for your child to stay at school for supervision on Oct. 21.
General information about Early Release Wednesdays, including all the dates for this year, can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/family-resources/safety-and-transportation/limited-early-release-wednesdays
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:
-
Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.
-
Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
