⚡ OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Sol to Generate Complex Responses at One-Fifth the Cost of Its Flagship

OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol that brings near-GPT-6 Astra intelligence at a fraction of the price.

What’s new:

  • GPT-6.1 Sol is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, one-fifth of what GPT-6 Astra costs, with cached input at $0.10 per million tokens, making it significantly cheaper to run at scale
  • On complex software engineering tasks in real codebases, it matches GPT-6 Astra’s performance at one-fifth of the cost
  • On professional document work across finance, healthcare, and legal, it outperforms Claude Opus 5.5 at less than half the cost and comes close to GPT-6 Astra at one-fifth the price
  • On multi-step business workflows across sales, marketing, operations, finance, and HR, it scores above Claude Opus 5.5 at roughly a third of the cost
  • On computer use tasks, it outperforms the previous GPT-6 Sol by seven percentage points at less than half the cost
  • On scientific research tasks including data analysis and simulation, it delivers results at $5.47 per task on average, compared to over $23 for Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra
  • It is 32% less likely to give a factually incorrect answer than GPT-6 Sol at low reasoning effort
  • Available now in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users, and through the OpenAI API
  • GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast, with up to 8x faster token generation, is coming to Codex in the coming days

Why it matters:

Frontier AI models have always come with a trade-off: the best results cost the most to run, and most teams either overpay or settle for less. GPT-6.1 Sol closes that gap in a meaningful way.

For anyone who has been holding off on building with GPT-6 Astra because the cost does not pencil out, this changes the calculation.
